The Lawrence farm, same day, later that afternoon

Pearl Tyler was sitting at the kitchen table, eating a slice of Iva Lawrence’s homemade pear pie. She had sold all her pies but one, which she brought home for the family to enjoy.

“Would you like some more milk Pearl?” Iva asked her, standing by the fridge.

“No thank you. As soon as I finish this, I’m going to lie down. It’s been a long morning.”

Iva sat down beside her. “Especially with Quinn around.” She leaned back in her chair and sighed. “Are you sure you can handle him Pearl?”

Pearl nodded. “I think so. And now that Megan’s ghost is popping up to keep an eye on things, I’m sure he’ll be on his best behavior.” She was about to eat her last bite of pie, but put her fork down. “Did I really just say all that?”

Iva laughed. “You’ll get used to all of this, now that you’re going to be here for a little while. You won’t even blink when you start talking about ghosts and vampires. It’ll be old hat.”

Pearl finished her pie before waiting to talk again. “I’m not so sure about that.”

The doorbell rang. “I hope that’s not Quinn again,” Pearl moaned.

Gene Lawrence popped his head into the kitchen. “I’ll get the door.”

“If it’s Quinn, tell him Pearl is resting and can’t be disturbed,” Iva instructed her husband.

“You know it.” Gene grinned and headed to the living room. A moment later, the two women could hear him enthusiastically greeting Damien Collins. Iva looked at Pearl, who smiled.

Gene led Damien into the kitchen. He motioned towards Pearl. “There’s the lovely lady you want.”

Damien grinned at her. “Hi Red.”

“Hello yourself,” she replied cheerfully.

“I’ve come to take you for a ride,” he told her. “The fresh air will do you good.”

“Oh, I don’t know Damien. I was just about to take a rest.”

He responded by pulling her out of the chair and into his arms. “I’ll rest with you then.”

Pearl blushed, and Gene and Iva chuckled softly. “Let’s go for that ride instead,” Pearl said, visibly embarrassed.

Portland, Maine

Duncan Tyler had just gotten off the plane and was quickly heading out of the airport. He hoped his rented car was waiting for him. He was anxious to begin the long drive to Haven. He had printed out a map of Maine on the Internet and figured he could make the trip without having to stop for directions.

Pearl’s ex-boss Julie Hastings had told him, albeit reluctantly, that Pearl was staying with a family called the Lawrences, and they owned a big farm in town that wasn’t hard to find as Haven only had nine residents. Luckily Duncan still had Pearl’s cell phone number. He thought about calling her but decided to surprise her instead. He knew she would be furious but he had to take the risk. He was desperate for a second chance, and was ready to commit to being a father to their unborn child.

I’m not letting you get away from me for a second time, he vowed to himself. He didn’t realize he had to stand in line for a chance at his ex-wife.

Haven Lake

Damien sat under a mammoth pine tree, watching Pearl slowly stroll beside the lake. Her red hair was being gently blown around her face by a mild breeze, as was the bottom of her pale blue shirtdress, another gift to her from Iva Lawrence.

On the way to the lake, he had expressed his displeasure at her allowing Quinn to visit her. “I still don’t like him coming to see you,” he had said to her. “It makes me sick knowing you were alone with him this morning.”

“I know,” Pearl had answered quietly. “But if I had continued to hide, who knows what he would have done, to the Lawrences, or you or your family. You’ve all been so good to me,  I couldn’t have risked that. No, it’s better this way. And maybe as my pregnancy advances, he’ll be less interested in me.”

I still don’t trust him,” he remembered replying back. “I’ve known him for many years. He’s sneaky and manipulative.”

“Damien, can we talk about something else?” Pearl asked, getting frustrated.

He had wanted to tell her right then he was falling in love with her. But he decided not to. Pearl was already going through a whirlwind of emotions, the last thing she needed was this bombshell dropped on her. He was afraid she would become distant, and he didn’t want that.

Damien sighed and leaned back against the tree, continuing to watch Pearl. Suddenly, a chilly blast of air went through the back of his body. He turned around, to see a glimpse of something white and glowing float into the woods behind him. He jumped up.

Pearl had seen everything and headed for Damien. “Did you see her?” she asked him in an excited tone.

“Her? All I saw was a white blob,” Damien responded, still shivering from the cold that had gripped his body.

Pearl reached out and touched his arm. “There’s something I haven’t told you Damien. You’re not going to believe it—I hardly can believe it myself—but I think you should know,” she said seriously.

Damien grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him. “What is it?” he asked.

“Let’s take a walk by the lake, and I’ll tell you everything,” Pearl answered. The two started for the water. As they strolled, Megan Manning’s ghost watched the couple from behind some trees, a smile forming on her lips.

Coming up next:

  • Pearl tells Damien about Megan’s ghost.
  • Iva reveals to Gene she and Sadie resurrected Megan.
  • Megan taunts Quinn about Damien and Pearl’s afternoon outing by the lake.
