- Gene’s hunch led him to Pearl and he planned to take her back to Haven.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, middle of the night
Pearl Tyler was in a wheelchair, her raincoat draped across her lap. Gene Lawrence, who had come to the hospital on a wild hunch after hearing his wife’s vision of his new friend in trouble, was wheeling her out of the ER and to his waiting van.
“Looks like it stopped raining,” he said as the two were headed for the double doors.
“Well, that’s good,” Pearl replied.
“You must be hungry. We’ll stop and see if we can find something open for a bite to eat before we make the long trip back to Haven. I also promised I would find a phone and call my wife.”
“You don’t have a cell?” Pearl asked.
“I wanted to get one, but Iva doesn’t like them. She thinks they’re too distracting. I sure could have used one in a situation like this.”
The doors automatically opened and Gene pushed her out into the chilly late night air. Pearl shivered a bit.
“We’ll get you warmed up as soon as we get into the van,” Gene promised.
“I don’t have any of my things, only my purse and the clothes I’m wearing,” Pearl told him. The paramedics promised they would call the police and have my car towed to the nearest station for pick-up, which they said was in Bigelow. But the doctor said I can’t drive because of what happened tonight.” She began to cry. “Everything is gone Gene. I can’t go to Bangor—there goes my job, my way of supporting myself and my daughter. I don’t know what I’m going to do,” she sniffed through her tears.
Gene stopped pushing her and knelt down in front of her. He grabbed her left hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll get things straightened out once we get back to Haven. Right now, just focus on getting better and your baby girl.”
Pearl nodded, but she felt depressed and hopeless. Everything she had worked for was gone in an instant. And now she was on her way back to the very town she had to escape in the first place. She might as well just give herself up to Quinn Nightshade and face the consequences.
Meanwhile, Quinn was attempting to make his way inside the main lobby of the hospital but was having trouble with an elderly bum who wouldn’t leave him alone.
“Go away, I’m not giving you any money. And why are you out this time of night? Don’t you have a bench you should be sleeping on?” Quinn rudely asked.
“Aw come on, give an old man a break mister,” the bum replied in exasperation. “I just want a few dollars for a sandwich.”
“You mean a bottle of booze,” Quinn retorted haughtily.
“You want to get into the hospital mister? Then give me some money and I’ll leave you alone,” the old man said, getting angry. “I’m tired of rich snobs like you looking down on me. I was like you once.”
No, you were never like me, Quinn thought disgustingly. You’ll never know what it’s like to always have a hunger that never ends, threatening to drive you completely mad… The look on his handsome face changed from disgust, and he smiled at the bum. “Tell you what. Let’s go for a little walk. Is there a place that’s open where I can get you something to eat?” His strong craving for blood had overtaken his desire to find Pearl and Gene.
The old man grinned. “Now that’s more like it. There’s a diner just a few blocks away from the hospital. They serve the best burgers in town.”
“Well then, what are we waiting for? Let’s go,” Quinn said. He put an arm around the man and off they walked into the night. The old man was so happy he didn’t see Quinn’s demonic smile, ready to sink his sharp fangs into his neck.
On the opposite side of the hospital, Gene was driving out of the parking lot, searching for a place to eat. Moments later, he spotted some pay phones on the side of the road. “Pearl, do you mind if I stop her for a few minutes? I’m going to call Iva and tell her you’re fine and we’re heading home.”
“Sure,” Pearl answered softly.
Gene smiled at her as he got out of the van and headed to a phone. Pearl sighed, closed her eyes and sunk down in the seat. She placed her hands on her belly and gently rubbed it.
“I guess you really want to be back in Haven little girl,” she told the baby. “Even though it means being in mortal danger. You’re obviously too brave for your own good,” she teased. She laughed, despite the grave situation she was in.
Quinn stood above his latest victim, finally sated. The old man was lying in the rain-slicked alley, his eyes closed as if he was asleep, but he wasn’t. Two small bloody puncture wounds on the left side of his neck showed the evidence of his quick, but terrifying encounter with the hungry vampire hybrid. The police would have a field day wondering what happened to him, Quinn dementedly thought.
“Sorry you didn’t get your meal old man, but you had no idea how much I needed mine,” Quinn murmured. “Now, back to finding Gene and my little redhead. I can’t wait to see what she looks like.” Humming to himself, he left the alley, heading back to his car.
When Gene got back in the van after talking to his wife, he noticed Pearl was asleep, her raincoat wrapped tightly around her. He made the decision to drive straight back to Haven. They would have breakfast later that morning.
The Lawrence farm, dawn
Gene and Iva watched Pearl as she lay asleep in her new home in the basement of their farmhouse. Iva had stayed up all night waiting for Gene and when he called her and told her he had found Pearl and what had happened, she readily agreed to have her come stay. She fixed up the basement bedroom for her new visitor. Somehow, Gene had managed to avoid Quinn on the way back to Haven.
“Come on love, let’s get ourselves to bed. It’s been a long night,” Gene told his wife.
Later that morning
Pearl was sitting at the kitchen table, eating a piece of toast. She was starving. Iva and Sadie were sitting with her, also eating breakfast.
Gene entered the kitchen and helped himself to a cup of coffee. “I have some good news for you Pearl. I called over to the Collins place and told them what happened. Damien is on his way to see you. He couldn’t wait.”
“You’re so lucky Pearl,” Sadie sighed.
Pearl was taken aback. “Lucky? How? My car is an hour’s away from here and I can’t drive it. I’m in danger of being molested by a vampire sex maniac, and I can’t leave this farm.” Pearl replied.
“Okay, so that’s bad, but you’re lucky because Damien Collins has a thing for you. He’s gorgeous!” Sadie swooned.
Pearl couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve only known the man for a day and a half. Don’t start picking out wedding gifts just yet. Besides, you are aware he’s uh, well, part wolf?”
“It sure wouldn’t stop me,” Sadie said.
“Sadie Olivia Todd!” Iva exclaimed. “Control yourself!”
“Well, at least we’re not talking about Quinn,” Sadie countered back.
“I don’t want to talk about him.” Pearl shuddered. “From what you’ve told me about him, he sounds absolutely dreadful. I’d rather be the Bride of Frankenstein.”
The Nightshade residence, same time
“Quinn, you have gone off the deep end. Just when I thought you couldn’t get any nuttier, you go and stalk Gene Lawrence all the way to Lewiston because you think he knows this mysterious redhead you’re sure is the driver of that car was there?” Jude yelled at his brother.
“I know she exists Jude,” Quinn insisted. “And I’m going to find her.”
Jude threw down his napkin on the kitchen table. “You will do no such thing.”
“Don’t order me around,” Quinn growled. “You have no right to treat me like a child.”
Jude sighed and clasped his hands together. “I have every right to treat you how the hell I want when you’re acting like an idiot. The first sign that some woman with red hair might be around, you act like some sex-starved pervert.”
“Jude—“ Quinn began.
“No, let’s play this out. Let’s say this redheaded woman exists. But what if she’s not a grown woman. What if she’s a little girl? That would make you a pedophile. Or what if she isn’t a she after all? You never stopped to think about the possibilities because you’re thinking with your penis instead of your brain!”
“You can speculate all you want little brother, but I know it’s a woman. Sadie Todd told me so yesterday,” Quinn retorted.
“How would Sadie know this?” Jude argued back.
“Iva Lawrence had a vision of a redheaded woman and me. You know she’s clairvoyant. I will find this woman and she will be with me Jude. Don’t try to stop me from finding her.” Quinn shot his brother an angry look and got up from the table.
“Where are you going?” Jude demanded.
“Off to find my new Megan,” Quinn replied, a lustful grin on his face. “And I know exactly where she is.
Back at the Lawrence farm
“Pearl, I can’t believe I’m seeing you again so soon.” Damien Collins held her tightly as they stood in the kitchen. He was glad to be reunited with her, but also worried that she was back in Haven, where Quinn could have a chance at her.
“Well, I wish this was under happier circumstances Damien,” Pearl told him sadly. She peered into his dark brown eyes. “I’m sure Gene told you I have to be on bed rest until my daughter is born.”
He nodded. “Gene and Iva and Sadie will take good care of you. They’ll protect you from Quinn. And so will I.” He hugged her again. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“You know what today is, don’t you?” Pearl quietly asked.
“Wednesday,” Damien answered, not getting her hint.
“Besides that.” Pearl shook her head. “Men,” she muttered. “You can all be so daft sometimes.”
Damien suddenly remembered. He couldn’t believe he forgot. “The full moon is tonight.”
“That’s right. So I better not see any big hairy wolves on this farm tonight, understand?” She gave him a playfully serious look.
“Yes, sir, Damien replied, grinning. He took her into his arms again and gazed out through the kitchen window at the sun-drenched morning sky, his worries about Pearl’s safety returning.
