- Pearl was incredulous as Damien finally revealed that he and his family were werewolves, as well as the real details behind Megan’s murder.
- Damien told Pearl he believes Quinn will come after her and that it’s important she get out of Haven.
The Collins home, the next morning
Pearl Tyler was back in her bed, sleeping soundly. The lavender tea that Rhiannon Collins had made for her did its job. But Damien was already up, sitting in the rocking chair in Pearl’s room, watching her as she lay silent, her belly rising and falling with each breath.
A moment later, his sister Astrid entered. Damien put a finger to his lips and she nodded, glancing at Pearl. Damien got up out of the rocking chair and motioned for Astrid to go back out in the hallway.
“I just wanted to see if she was still asleep,” Astrid said. “Last night must have been very difficult for her.”
“It would have been difficult for anyone to accept.” Damien rubbed his chin. “Lord I need to shave, or I’ll look like Santa Claus pretty soon.”
“You don’t have to worry about shaving, not until after tomorrow night,” Astrid teased. She growled and raised her arms in a mock attack gesture.
“Be serious little sister,” Damien chided. “I don’t want Pearl here when we change.” He headed down the hall into the living room. “I’m going to see how Dad’s doing with Pearl’s car. Let me know when she wakes up, okay?”
“Boy do you have it bad for her,” Astrid teased again. “I’ve never seen you get so enchanted with a woman this fast.” She grinned widely at her brother.
Damien leaned up against a wall and smiled. “There’s something special about her Astrid. I can’t put my finger on it.” His smile rapidly turned into a frown. “Maybe if things were different and I wasn’t…” His voice trailed off.
“You mean if you weren’t a snarling wolf when the moon turns full, you and she could have a chance,” Astrid finished. She placed a hand on her brother’s shoulder. “But you still could Damien. It didn’t stop Mum from giving into her heart and making a life with Daddy.”
“But our mother didn’t have the danger of Quinn Nightshade dragging her off and doing God knows what to her like Pearl does.”
“Do you really think Quinn would actually attempt to make a move on Pearl? She looks nothing like Megan and she’s pregnant. I would automatically think being several months along would put out the fire, if you know what I mean,” Astrid replied.
“Don’t underestimate him Astrid,” Damien warned. “He’s unstable and likely to do anything.”
Suddenly, the two heard male voices, arguing. One of them was their father, Caleb. The other voice stopped the siblings dead in their tracks. It was the voice of Quinn Nightshade. Rhiannon came running from the kitchen and out the living room door. Damien and Astrid soon followed. They saw Caleb and Quinn out by Pearl’s car. All three of them were instantly filled with dread and prayed that Pearl wouldn’t wake up, risking being seen by Quinn.
“I’ll handle this,” Rhiannon told her children, marching towards Caleb and Quinn. As the two stood on the porch, their stomachs in knots, they watched Rhiannon enter the fray.
“What’s going on gentlemen?” she casually asked.
Caleb turned to his wife, a cold hard look on his face. “What’s going on is that Quinn, as usual, can’t mind his own damn business.”
“Why are you here Quinn?” Rhiannon asked point blank.
Quinn folded his arms across his chest. “I saw this car last night and I figured whoever drove it had to be here. We know people just don’t stop here, so I wanted to see for myself. You know I’ve always been a curious man, Rhiannon.” He smiled at her, and it made her skin crawl.
“And I told you, this car is abandoned. Damien and I brought it here to work on it. That’s all. Nobody is here except us. Now get off my property fangface,” Caleb angrily retorted, his eyes shooting daggers at Quinn.
“That’s very mature of you Caleb. But coming from a Muppet with claws, what do you expect?” Quinn snootily shot back.
Caleb started towards Quinn and Rhiannon stepped in front of him. “That’s enough from you two. Caleb, go inside the house, breakfast is almost ready. And you Quinn, I think you’ve overstayed your welcome. Please leave.” She put her hands on her hips and stared him down.
“This car is not abandoned. Someone crashed it. It has Pennsylvania tags. Do you really think someone would come all the way from Pennsylvania to abandon their car here?” Quinn countered.
“It makes perfect sense to me Quinn.” Quinn, Caleb and Rhiannon all turned to see Astrid approaching them. “Anyone who drives through this town knows it’s nothing but a speck. It’s the perfect place to abandon a car.” She teasingly rubbed the sleeve of Quinn’s leather jacket, smiling coyly at him. “Come on love, you should have come to that conclusion already. You’re a lot smarter than that.”
Rhiannon and Caleb looked away, trying to keep from laughing at their daughter’s playful flirting.
But Quinn was unmoved. “I know someone’s here, and I’ll be back when you least expect it.” With an icy look at the three Collinses, he turned on his heel and walked towards his black Corvette.
“That’s right, leave!” Caleb shouted at him. “Go find another neck to bite somewhere else, you crazy bloodsucker!”
While Caleb, Rhiannon and Astrid were arguing with Quinn, Damien stood inside the doorway watching. He was about to leave to tend to Pearl when he heard her coming into the living room. “Good morning Damien. What’s so interesting out there?”
He whirled around and grabbed her arms. “Don’t stand by the door. Quinn’s out there.”
Pearl’s face turned white. “Do you think he knows I’m here?”
Damien shook his head. “He saw your car, but I think Mum, Dad and Astrid convinced him the car was abandoned. Still, I think you should stay inside in case he comes back to snoop.”
Pearl started trembling. Damien put his arms around her. “It’ll be okay. I know Dad will get the car fixed and you’ll be on your way today. Why don’t you go into the kitchen and get something to eat. I’ll be in shortly.”
She nodded and released herself from Damien, going to the kitchen. A few seconds later, Caleb, Rhiannon and Astrid came back into the house.
“It’s not looking good son,” Caleb said gravely. “Quinn is convinced someone’s here. He’ll be back, I know it. He looked around the room. “Is Pearl still sleeping?”
“No, she’s in the kitchen. Don’t worry, Quinn didn’t see her,” Damien told his father.
Caleb breathed a sigh of relief. “Good. Well, let’s get some breakfast and then you and I will get working on Pearl’s car. The sooner we do, the sooner she’ll be out of here.”
Quinn sat inside his car, parked in the woods across from the Collins’ home. Despite the family’s angry protests, he knew the owner of the car was with them, and he was determined to see who the driver looked like. It had been a long time since fresh human blood had come to Haven, and his craving was much too strong to resist. He would stay in his car all day if he had to, waiting for the mystery guest to reveal themselves…so he could reveal himself.
